In an unprecedented move, leading representatives of the global travel and tourism industry have joined together to support a new ambitious global health initiative, MASSIVEGOOD.
MASSIVEGOOD is a movement aimed at saving lives by treating and fighting life-threatening diseases among the world's most vulnerable populations. Funding for this movement is based on voluntary micro-contributions (USD $2 or equivalent in other currencies) that travelers can add on top of their reservation price each time they fly, book a hotel room or a rent a car.
"When Millennium Foundation first approached Sabre about this initiative, we jumped at the opportunity to support it," said Sam Gilliland, CEO and Chairman of Sabre Holdings. "This is one of those unique opportunities where you unite as a travel industry to help tackle the challenges faced by those in developing countries. With more than 40% of the world's travel agencies using Sabre, we feel confident that we can make a positive contribution to MASSIVEGOOD, and encourage travelers to support this when launched."
back to topMASSIVEGOOD is the first major fundraising initiative launched by the Millennium Foundation, whose mission is to mobilize new sources of innovative funding to help eradicate life-threatening contagious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, among the world's most vulnerable populations. The initiative seeks to raise funding for the fight through a World Health Organization-hosted organization, UNITAID.
Each time an airline, hotel or rental car reservation is booked, a simple click will allow travelers to contribute to the initiative. In an industry that accounts for almost 10% of the world's gross domestic product (GDP), the movement has the potential to raise up to $1 billion in additional funding for global health during its first four years of operation.
